House HuntingWhat is the OAHI ?

The OAHI (Ontario Association of Home Inspectors) is a non profit organization that was created by Royal Assent on December 9, 1994 in the Ontario Legislature from the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors Act, 1994.

The goal of the OAHI is to enhance the technical skills and professional practice of Home Inspection experts and maintain the highest professional standards through education and consistent discipline and practice. The OAHI is also dedicated to increasing public awareness about the advantages of obtaining professional inspections when it comes to contemplating the purchase of a new property.

The OAHI promotes consistent guidelines and standards of practice for all of it’s members and promotes the value of home inspectors for it’s members and the profession as a whole.

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a home inspector. Anyone with industry experience, from skilled tradespeople, to contractors and those from the contraction fields can and do position themselves as home inspectors. It is important to remember that there is no single other profession or line of work that would fully prepare you to become a Home Inspector. Although construction related fields require an understanding of how new homes are built, they rarely deal with the extended use and age related deterioration of components that the Home Inspector encounters daily. You will need extensive detailed knowledge in many areas such as electrical and plumbing systems, heating and cooling systems, roofing, attic structures, as well as interior components and structures. You will also require knowledge of components that are obsolete yet still in service. No single course, nor even a collection of courses can prepare you for all of the significant conditions that occur in the field. The ability to recognize a condition or defect that may be a problem comes in part from experience with “what can go wrong”.

By ensuring that your home inspector is affiliated with a reputable licensing body like the OAHI, you know right away that you are dealing with a professional that has been trained in and recognizes the most up to date standards and practices.

At HomeOwners inspection services we pride ourselves on our consistency, our attention to detail and our affiliation with the OAHI.
